Civi Engineering Unhas Involves in CALHOEA Project

Unhas is one of the universities in ASEAN and Europe that is involved in the CALOHEA project (Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia). There are two study programs in Unhas involved, Civil Engineering and Medicine Study Program. CALOHEA is sponsored by the European Union, with University of Groningen & ASEAN University Network act as Project Coordinators. Previously, the European Commission has sponsored a similar project; CALOHEE (Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Europe).

Internationalization is one of the pressing issues for South-East Asian Higher Education Institutions (HEI), vision and mission statements, as well as strategic plans confirm the strong will of the HEIs in the Asia Region to strive for Internationalization for the sake of students & graduates. What HEIs & policymakers lack are the core Recognition Mechanisms. To address this gap, CALOHEA brings together 29 HEIs from 8 SEA Countries and 5 EU partners highly experienced in creating and helping HEIs adopt the core Recognition Mechanisms.

The general objective of CALOHEA is to contribute to the internationalization of higher education institutions through developing a series of interrelated measures indispensable for improving recognition of higher education degree. CALOHEA was established to encourage HEIs in ASEAN and Europe, improve the educational system’s quality, and graduate to the international level, especially in Civil Engineering (a door to the Engineering sector), Medicine (a door to the Health sector), and Teaching (a door to Social Sciences).

Head of the Institute for Quality Assurance and Education Development (LPMPP), Dr. Ir. Prastawa Budi, M.Sc., explained that the involvement of Unhas in the CALOHEA Project was related to active participation in the ASEAN University Network (AUN).

Unhas has 27 certified study programs that meet the AUN-QA criteria (ASEAN University Network for Quality Assurance). For such achievement, then AUN offered the CALOHEA Project to Unhas to apply for a Medicine and Civil Engineering Study Program to participate.

“Civil Engineering and Medicine Study Programs are the first two study programs certified by AUN-QA in 2016. Therefore, in terms of quality, the two study programs have met at least the ASEAN qualification framework according to the higher education competency standards in ASEAN countries,” explained Prastawa.

Furthermore, Prastawa added that the involvement of Unhas in the CALOHEA project would impact recognition by various universities involved in the project, especially in ASEAN and Europe.

For the Civil Engineering Subject Area Group, the Civil Engineering Unhas is one of the participants among 16 universities in 9 ASEAN and European countries. Where, the delegation of Indonesian Civil Engineering Study Program is represented by Universitas Hasanuddin, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, dan Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. This project takes 3 years (2021-2024) to create & install the 3 core Recognition Mechanisms.
